Project Summary
Shell Canada faced challenges with their contractor training system, which relied on costly and time-consuming classroom sessions, resulting in inconsistent training and delays. To address these issues, Oracast web app developers teamed up with ICOM Productions to develop the Shell Canada Contractor Portal. This online platform delivers web-based training accessible from anywhere, storing data in a centralized database for real-time access by Shell employees. The portal has streamlined the training process, reduced costs, and improved safety by providing immediate and consistent training to a larger number of contractors. This innovative solution has saved Shell Canada millions and enhanced their operational efficiency.
“The web-based system that Oracast built us has paid for itself hundreds of times over.”
The Customer
Shell Canada, one of the world's leading oil producers, relies on independent contractors for nearly every facet of their operations. These contractors must adhere to stringent health and safety standards mandated by both Federal and Provincial laws, as well as Shell Canada's own rigorous health and safety commitments.
The Challenge
Training for these contractors has traditionally been conducted in classrooms, which is costly and limits the ability to train all contractors quickly. Additionally, Shell Canada discovered that different instructors provided inconsistent results in standardized training. Each new contractor had to undergo training before going on-site, and their training records had to be logged within Shell so that all divisions could verify completion. Moreover, Shell employees struggled to determine if a contractor possessed the required safety certifications.
This system was time-consuming, expensive, and difficult to manage within Shell, resulting in contractor wait times for classroom sessions and inconsistent training quality.
The Approach
Oracast partnered with ICOM Productions, a company specializing in online training videos, to develop a solution to Shell Canada's training challenges. To eliminate classroom wait times and provide immediate training, we aimed to deliver online training through a standard internet browser, enabling instant access from virtually anywhere in the world.
The online training data would be stored in a centralized database, allowing Shell Canada employees to access real-time information to easily verify who is authorized to work on-site.
Oracast developed the Shell Canada Contractor Portal, accessible by both Shell employees and registered contractors. Contractors can register and complete Shell Canada's training, while Shell employees can manage the system and access necessary information about on-site workers. Administrators can add web-based training material that follows a simple set of guidelines, making it instantly available to registered users.
The Outcome
Shell Canada's Contractor Portal has successfully delivered web-based training to contractors worldwide, significantly reducing the need for classroom sessions and virtually eliminating wait times. This has resulted in a larger pool of well-trained contractors ready for work as needed. Additionally, Shell Canada employees can now effortlessly access the system to verify necessary information before allowing a worker on-site, thereby enhancing organizational safety.
The Contractor Portal has streamlined the training process, lowered training costs, and saved millions in the process.
